History of New York City: G Block
Trinity Church- Located at 79 Broadway (Corner of Wall St.), Lower Manhattan
- In 1696, then governor, Benjamin Fletcher, approved the bid by the Church of England to purchase the land in Lower Manhattan for the purpose of a new church.
- The land was rented out for six bushels of wheat per year.
- During a battle in the Revolutionary War, Trinity Church was ruined in a fire, but immediately reconstructed into the Second Trinity Church.
- The Second Trinity Church was heavily impacted by severe snow storms and was forced to be rebuilt in 1846 into the Third Trinity Church, which still stands today.
- The Trinity Church is a classic example of Gothic Architecture as evident by the Churches many arches and domes.

I think it is cool how this church was a main symbol of NYC for such a long time and was restored so many times to keep it that was. Also, the idea that it was used as a refuge during 9/11 is amazing. I cannot think of another structure that has been at the core of New York for such a long time.
ReplyDeleteIt's also amazing to think that this church spire was once the tallest structure in Manhattan - the first thing sailors would see from afar as they sailed into the harbor.
