its pretty interesting how 8 million people walked through the fort
ReplyDelete8 million was a lot to walk through the fort especially when all the immigrants went there to take the Ellis island ferry, but didnt know that much what was going on. The fort was also used for meeting areas and opera shows. Even today, Castle Garden is still a pretty sight to look at and take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting standing in one of the first gates into the new world. The amount of people let in and even kept out is substantial. I think it is also ironic that the place that let everyone in was also filled with powerful cannons that could easily keep people out.
ReplyDeleteI think its neat that this fort was once an island and was connected to Manhattan by 19th century landfill.
ReplyDeleteThe comment about the distance the cannon's could be fired from here was somewhat shocking. It proves as a perfect spot for a fort because of this and because of the location in regards to where other fleet could come from. I can imagine just how nice the view of Governor's Island and the Statue of Liberty must be on a sunny day.
